“Draw your chair up close to the edge of the precipice, and I’ll tell you a story,” F. Scott Fitzgerald once wrote.
Photography of humans, when executed properly, achieves a level of true intimacy. The gap between modeling/acting and being photographed as your genuine self is wide, yet these concepts are often mixed up. Modeling/acting blends natural talent, refined technical skill, and keen emotional insight. Conversely, being photographed is about being open and vulnerable; it’s about trust between you and the photographer, revealing your true self, with all its strengths and imperfections.
A meaningful photograph is often the result of someone’s bravery, their willingness to take a risk, and embrace the excitement that comes with it. This bravery is what makes great photography, just as it makes great literature.
